Activities

The Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Botany, and the Department of Zoology, in collaboration with KSCSTE, the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala, and Rutgers State University of New Jersey, conducted an Erudite Lecture on 'The Sub-Zero Microbiome: Seasonal Dynamics of Sub-Zero-Active Bacterial Communities in Arctic Tundra Soils by Prof. Max M. Häggblom, Distinguished Professor and Chair, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers the State University of New Jersey, USA, On March 8, 2023 at B- Hub,Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar. The world we live in is full of mysteries, and the complex systems that govern our planet's ecology are among the most fascinating. The study of sub-zero active bacterial communities is one such area and it has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of how life thrives in extreme environments. Prof. Hagglom has explained what makes these communities so remarkable is their ability to adapt to the changing seasons. Depending on how temperatures rise and fall and how the amount of available sunlight varies, these bacteria adjust their metabolism and activity levels to ensure their survival. This remarkable feat of adaptation is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of life on our planet.

The event started with a welcome address by Dr. Sarika, scientist, KSCSTE followed by the presidential address from Prof. Dr. Jijimon K Thomas, The Principal, of Mar Ivanios College. The programme was inaugurated by Padma Shri. M. Chandra Dathan, Mentor, Science, Government of Kerala, and was felicitated by: Prof. Salom Gnana Thanga V. Prof. and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala. Programme Coordinator Dr. Lini N. introduced the speaker to the audience and Dr. Suju Skaria, Head of Department of Botany delivered the vote of thanks. The event was enlightened by the presence of dignitaries Dr. Vijayakumar, Scientist, KSCSTE, Fr. Soji Muruppel, Bursar, Mar Ivanios College, Dr. Deepthy Alex, Head, Department of Biotechnology, faculties and students from various institutions and colleges. The programme was funded Kerala State higher education council.
