Overview

About the Department

The Department of Commerce was established in 1954 with a three-year undergraduate course. In 1961 it was converted to a Post Graduate Department and in 2001 it was recognised as Research Centre by the University of Kerala. Over the years it has established itself as the centre of excellence in Commerce Education and Research in the state of Kerala.

It is one of the few departments under the University of Kerala which offers three elective options at the graduate level for the student to choose from namely Computer Application, Co-operation and Finance. At the Post Graduate Level apart from M.Com (Finance) it offers interdisciplinary courses in commerce to Post Graduate students of the Department of Tourism. The Department also offers an Open Course “Fundamentals of Financial Accounting” to aspiring students from non-commerce degree streams. Due to the heavy demand for its courses a self-financing stream was started as part of the department in the year 2015. Today apart from the aided courses the department offers two-degree programmes i.e. B.Com (Finance) and B.Com (Accounts & Audit) under the self-financing wing.

The broad research areas of the department include Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Marketing, Knowledge Management and International Business. Over the years it has successfully completed 2 UGC major research projects and 3 minor research projects. At present, it has 6 Approved Research Guides, 16 Full-Time and 7 Part-time research scholars.

To prepare the students to meet the job market demands the department hosts certificate courses which impart skills and knowledge beyond the degree courses. Tally Ace Programme implemented in association with Tally Education Pvt. Ltd. for the students of the department and Certificate Course in Financial Accounting for non-commerce students are initiatives to enhance student knowledge in the accounting domain.

The department regularly organizes various academic programmes in collaboration with reputed Institutions of Higher Education and also professional associations in the country like The Indian Accounting Association, ICAI, CMA, ICSI and Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Through the Mar Ivanios College Commerce Association (MICCA) the department hosts open forums, group discussions, business quizzes, guest lectures, business plan presentations, debates, JAM etc. to empower the students with academic and technical excellence. The internship programme has also been incorporated into the syllabi at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels apart from assignments, seminars and projects. The department has also made it a policy to undertake extension activities class-wise so as to maintain a link between the student and the society.

Career guidance initiatives are undertaken by the department in collaboration with Career and Placement Cell of the college and over the years our students have got placements in reputed institutions including prominent banks like Federal Bank Ltd., The South Indian Bank Ltd. and MNCs like McKinsey Global Services.

Members of the Faculty have functioned regularly in the Boards of Studies of both UG and PG levels at the University of Kerala and in professional associations like The Indian Commerce Association and The Indian Accounting Association. The faculty members actively participate in all the activities and academic bodies of the college.
