Workshop on Flutter

A two-day Flutter workshop was conducted at Mar Ivanios College by the department of Computer Science in association with ICFOSS on February 29 and March 1, 2024, tailored for S4 Computer Science students to enhance their mobile application development skills. The workshop, led by Mr. K S Abhishek, a dedicated Flutter Developer, commenced with an introductory speech by Flickson J, expressing excitement to welcome Mr. Abhishek and highlighting his expertise in crafting exceptional user experiences. Mr. Abhishek's sessions covered a range of topics, including setting up a Flutter project, Dart programming basics, and advanced options in VSCode for Flutter development. His hands-on approach, where he personally assisted each participant and addressed their queries, was highly appreciated. The workshop, held at the Computer Science Department Lab, provided a conducive environment for collaborative learning, enabling participants to engage in practical exercises and exchange ideas. The event's success was attributed to Mr. Abhishek's exceptional training, the faculty's support, and the enthusiastic participation of the students. The vote of thanks was delivered by Hanan Faiza N, who expressed gratitude to Mr. Abhishek, the faculty, and the participants for making the workshop a memorable and enriching experience.

National Symposium on Language Computing

Organized by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Malayalam, Mar Ivanios College, Nalanchira, in association with ICFOSS.

Date: 23-25 Jan, 2024

Day 1: Inaugural Ceremony, Morning and Afternoon Sessions

The symposium commenced with a prayer song by Ms. Anjana from the Malayalam Department. Dr. Sajitha BL, Head, Department of Malayalam, delivered the welcome speech. The Presidential address was given by Rev. Fr. Vincy Varghese, Principal, Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum. Dr. Sunil TT, Director, ICFOSS, gave the inaugural speech, emphasizing the fundamental concepts behind artificial intelligence and machine learning. Felicitations were extended by Dr. Rajeev RR, Associate Professor, ICFOSS. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Tinu C Philip, Head, Department of Computer Science.

Later, Dr. Nisha Varghese, Assistant Professor, School of Sciences, Christ University, Bengaluru, delivered a talk on 'Recent Models in Language Technology,' providing insights into the advancements in the field.

The afternoon session featured a hands-on workshop on 'Introduction to LaTeX' by Ms. Meharuniza Nazeem and Ms. Arya Sreekumar from ICFOSS, Trivandrum.

 

Day 2: Morning Sessions and Paper Presentation

The second day began with a talk on 'Text Classification' by Dr. Sweety Bakyarani E, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai. Dr. Sweety Bakyarani shared practical aspects of text classification techniques. Ms. M Ramla, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Applications, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, discussed 'Named Entity Recognition,' providing valuable insights into this vital aspect of language computing.

A parallel session in the Zoology Seminar Hall showcased paper presentations covering various topics in Language Computing.

Day 3: Morning Sessions and Closing Ceremony

The morning session featured a hands-on workshop on 'Research Paper Template Preparation in LaTeX,' and 'Malayalam Document Creation in LaTeX,' conducted by Ms. Meharuniza Nazeem and Ms. Arya Sreekumar.

The afternoon session featured a talk on the 'Future of Language Technologies' by Dr. Rajeev RR, Associate Professor, ICFOSS, and providing attendees with insights into upcoming developments in the field.

The closing ceremony began with welcome speech by Dr. Rajeev M K, Assistant Professor, Department of Malayalam. Our principal Rev. Fr. Vincy Varghese delivered the presidential address. Dr. K. Oomachan, Director(SF) , Mar Ivanios College, and Dr. Rajeev RR provided evaluations of the symposium. Students shared their experiences, highlighting the symposium's educational impact. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anitha KL, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, acknowledging the active participation of participants and the hard work of the organizing and executive committees. The symposium served as a valuable platform to learn about current technologies and the imperative of enhancing language computing for Indian languages, particularly Malayalam.

Nexus Gaming Tournament

Department of BSc. Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram held a gaming tournament named NEXUS as part of our Association LYNX on September 11th,2023. The -competition was opened for all the students in the college. The programme consists of two tournaments like a FIFA Tournament and a Game Station Tournament. 

The winners of the tournament are:

The winners are awarded with exciting prizes on Association Day.

Workshop on Bharat Drive 4.0

The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College organized a 1 day hands-on workhop on “Bharat Drive 4.0” on 11th August 2023 in partnership with Riglabs powered by Zilicon which focuses on delivering, discussing and analysing the Industry4.0 ideas and concepts all over the country for the third-year computer science students at SF103. The session was conducted by Mr Abhijith Ajikumar, IoT and embedded system trainer at Riglabs and Mrs Aparna P Mahesh, IoT and embedded system trainer at ICT academy, Kerala. The technical experts discussed about a vast application of Robotics and embedded systems. It’s importance in present and upcoming world, fields in which it is used etc. First session was a complete introduction to industry 4.0 concepts, which refers to the fourth industrial revolution characterized by the integration of digital technologies into manufacturing and production processes which collectively contribute to increased efficiency, flexibility, and innovation in modern manufacturing and industrial processes. Overall, the workshop provided valuable insights into the world of robotics. It was very interesting and interactive session with extremely useful, great sources of information.

Technical talk on Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking

The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College organized a technical talk “Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking” on 23rd January 2023 by TechByHeart Academy. The session was handled by Mr. Dhanoop R., Associate Member at National Cyber Safety Security Standards, Volunteer at National Cyber Defence Research Centre, Cyber Security Analyst at Techbyheart India Pvt Ltd, Cyber Security Expert at Appin Technology Lab, Kochi (Delhi IIT Based Cyber Security Institution). He has handled many workshops in famous colleges in Kerala, Bangalore, and Tamilnadu. During the seminar, he discussed various cyber threats that individuals and organizations may face, including spamming, hijacking, and web-jacking. He also shared tips on how to prevent these threats and protect oneself and one's organization from potential cyber-attacks.

Visit to Bethania Rehabilitation Centre

The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College organized a visit to Bethania Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled located in Kumarapuram on 19th January 2023, Thursday. Two faculties (Dr. Anitha K L, Mrs. Jisha Issac) and 37 students visited Bethania Rehabilitation Centre. It is a centre for the rehabilitation of the physically disabled women at Kumarapuram, Trivandrum, Kerala, India. The centre was started on 1st June 1988. The centre is managed by the Bethany Sisters. It is also aided by the Government of India. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the rehabilitation services provided to individuals with disabilities and to gain an understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. Our visit to Bethania Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled was an eye-opening experience. We gained a better understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the importance of rehabilitation services in helping them lead fulfilling lives. The staffs at the centre were knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to their work, and the programs and services offered were comprehensive and tailored to meet the unique needs of clients with disabilities. We are grateful for the opportunity to visit the centre and learn about the important work being done there.

Field Trip on Environmental Studies

The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College organized a one-day trip to Munroe Island in Kollam district. The trip was planned and coordinated by the first year students as part of Environmental Studies. The trip was on 19th August 2022. We all gathered in college campus at 6 a.m. We started our journey in the bus ‘Voyager Travels and Tours’ at 6:30 a.m. Three faculties and 35 students were present for the trip. Munroe is an inland island group located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada river, in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. It is a group of eight small islets. This island is also known as “Sinking Island of Kerala”. The boating  lasted for about 3 hours and it was a relaxing journey  for us. We all took pictures and enjoyed the scenery. We stopped for some time to spend in water and it was a memorable moment. The natural beauty of the lake and the greenery surrounding it had a soothing effect on all of us. We learnt to spend some quality time with nature and to protect our nature for the future generations.

Nexus Gaming Tournament

The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram conducted a gaming tournament named NEXUS as part of our Association LYNX on March 8th, 2023. The competition was opened for all the students in the college. At 10.00am we started our tournament in our S1/S2 BSc. Computer Science class.

The winners of the tournament are:

The winners are awarded with cash prize on March 13th,2023 during the inauguration of our Association LYNX 2.0.

Machine learning is a field of study that has drastically grown in the last decades. Whenever one enters the Internet and uses a search engine or an automatic translation service, machine learning is present. The Department of Computer Science of Mar Ivanios College organized a technical talk “Machine Learning” on 27th October 2022 for the second year and third year students of Computer science department. The session was taken by Ms Reena mol V.U, Assistant Professor from St. Philomenas college, Mysore.

Linux installation

A one-day workshop on “ Linux installation” was organized by the Department of Computer Science, Mar Ivanios College, Nalanchira on 13-02-2019. The training session was conducted by Mr Athul R T, Research Scholar, CUSAT. The workshop explained in detail how to install a Linux distribution from scratch. A hands- on session was provided on Linux installation and configuration on a virtual machine.

Ivano Technovation

A Technical Expo named “Ivano Technovation” was conducted on February 17, 2017. All our students equally contributed to the successful accomplishment of this first venture. The expo was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Gigi Thomas, Principal, Mar Ivanios College. A seminar on “Frontiers of IT” was conducted at Mar Gregorios Hall, in cooperation with IIITMK, Trivandrum. The topics of the seminar included Machine Learning, Cyber-Security and Computer Vision, Geospatial Analytics, and Data Analytics. The models were arranged in the College Auditorium, The Silver Jubilee Hall, and the Computer Laboratory of our Department. This expo had drawn the attention of the viewers in and out of this college. The expo was concluded with an unplugged music performance by our students Mr. GokulHarshan, Joel Sebastian, and Tinu Cherian Thomas.

LYNX - the IT club

LYNX - the IT club by Dept. of Computer Science, Mar Ivanios College was inaugurated on 13th August 2019, Tuesday at the self-financing block. The Chief Guests of the event were Mr. Nikhil Krishna, Solution Architect and Solution Consultant at UST Global, and Mr. Pradeep Joseph, Product Manager at UST Global.

Workshop on Python Programming

As part of ICFOSS’s Women Hackathon programme a two-day workshop on “Python Programming” was conducted for our girl students by ICFOSS on 12th and 13th January 2022.

The session started with a welcome speech by our Director Dr. K. L. Anandavally. Followed by felicitation by our most respected principal, Dr. Jijimon K. Thomas. The programme was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Gigi Thomas.

Our Chief-guest Dr. Rajeev RR, Programme Head, ICFOSS gave an introduction about ICFOSS and their activities, and about the importance of the language Python.

The first session started at 11 am after the inauguration. The sessions were handled by Ms. Stephy Joseph (Research Associate at ICFOSS), Ms. Aswathy (Research Assistant at ICFOSS) and Ms. Inez(Research Fellow at ICFOSS). From this college, a total of 27 students from the Department of Computer Science participated in the programme.

The programme came to be very useful and it instilled in students a great interest to learn more about coding and programming. Truly the programme was an eye-opener for students with the help of these skilled and supportive teachers.

 

A workshop on Latex session

A workshop on Latex session was conducted for the 1st and 2nd years of B.Sc. Computer Science and 1st year of B.Sc. Statistics students of Mar Ivanios College on 29th and 30th November 2021by ICFOSS. On the first day, Ms. Anitha K L, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science gave the welcome note for the event. We thank Dr. Rajeev R.R, Program Head, ICFOSS for facilitating the workshop. Dr. Rajeev gave us an introduction to ICFOSS and its activities and programs. The session was continued by Ms. Seema. She has taught me about the basics of latex and the usage of Latex commands.  The second-day session was taken by Dr. Renu S. She taught the students how to insert tables, mathematical equations, theorems, circuits, and bibliography.
