About the Department

Our vision is to provide quality education in all spheres of Biotechnology with special thrust in Plant and Environmental Biotechnology and train the students so as to adapt to the international standards. Departments was established in 2001 attached to Dept of Botany. We became functioning as a separate department in 2014. Department is supported by DBT-star college scheme.

Department of Biotechnology offers a dual main having botany as core course and biotechnology as vocational course. Faculty strength is 3. Demand ratio of the course is 25:1. Average pass percentage is 75 for the past 5 years. We practice ICT enabled teaching methods with power point presentation and videos. Remedial classes are offered for supporting slow learners and offer walk with a scholar programmes and journal clubs for advanced learners. We organized 24 Seminars/workshops and invited lectures regularly to orient students in special areas of Biotechnology as well as various life skills. Job orientation sessions, internships as well as industrial/institutional visits are routine part of our programme. Our faculties have 20 international publications in the last 5 years and have participated in 54 seminars/workshops/conferences in total. Our department has sound infrastructure facilities with adequate instrumentation facilities for the smooth conduct of practical’s. We offer a theme based research and extension activities to groom students and in particular areas of Biotechnology which we consider as one among the best practices of our Department.

As a part of ‘Go Green - Save Nature and Save Future ‘movement, Department of Biotechnology, organized programmes to create an awareness on drinking water quality, public health, and the importance of solid waste management & Environmental protection. The lectures exhibitions and training programmes were organized based on this aspect. As our recent initiatives we started two consultancy programmes ‘Water quality analysis’ and ‘Antimicrobial activity testing’. The income earned by the programmes are used for conducting invited lectures and departmental activities.
