Two-Day International Seminar on Media and Communication concludes in Mar Ivanios College
The two-day Day International seminar under the theme, ‘Media and Communication in the Networked World: New Perspectives on History, Culture and Development’ was successfully concluded on Friday 17th March at Mar Ivanios College with the participation of about 20 speakers, 200 delegates (online and offline) and about 200 media students. 55 research papers were presented in the seminar.
The seminar was inaugurated by His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Polycarpos, Auxiliary Bishop, Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. He said, “I urge you to embrace the opportunities and challenges of media and communication in the networked world with courage and compassion. Let us go forth with open hearts and minds, and continue to build a better world through our work in media and communication. Let us build a digital world that reflects our highest values and aspirations, and that promotes the common good of all humanity”. The function was presided over by Principal Dr. Jijimon K. Thomas. Dr. S. R. Sanjeev and Mr. Juby John Eipe also participated in the inaugural ceremony.
Later, while delivering the keynote address, eminent media theoretician Prof. Dr. Mark deuze said, “Everyday life of humans has ‘mediatized’ and it’s better to embrace the reality. Although there is enough emphasis on the ‘content’ of the media, ‘form’ also has to be negotiated carefully in the media world, Dr. Deuze, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, said.
He further elaborated on the ‘media life perspective’ by explaining media and its engagements as an intrinsic factor in tech-mediated society. Media should not be viewed as a ‘technology deterministic’ entity; it should be understood as a technology-enabled system. This is the turn that one should look for in the computer-mediated life, said Mark Dueze.
Prof. Biswajit Das, Founder and Director of the Centre for Media Studies and Governance, Jamia Milia Islamia Central University, chaired the session. Dr. Deepak Padmanabhan, Associate Professor, at the University of Belfast explained the tools and methods of AI and Machine Learning that are helpful in detecting fake news and toxic content in digital-social networks. Gendering media is still an unfinished project, commented eminent journalists Kalpana Sarma and Ammu Joseph during another session of the seminar.
Media editors and academics discussed the ‘digital disruptions’ faced by mainstream media with emerging tools such as ChatGPT. They were of the view that such challenges should be addressed with human agency. Johny Lukose, Manoj K Das, S. Biju, Damodar Prasad, Dr. N Muhammadali, and Dr. M.S. Harikumar participated in the conversation.
Vice Principal Dr. Shirley Stewart delivered the valedictory address in the closing ceremony. Fr. Soji Mathew Muruppel, Burrsar felicitated the conference. Fr. Bastin Nellissery who led the team from Don Bosco Arts and Science College extended warm wishes and future cooperation for such academic endeavors.

Call for Papers:
COVID-19 has augmented the technological interventions in human life in many facets. The urge to replace the ‘social’ with the ‘virtual-social’ has paved the way for new habits and ways of life enabled by digital driven networks and technology. The thematic platform of the seminar foregrounds media as a confluence of networked entities which not only augment information diffusion but also transforms the very nature of the process of message formulation and reception. Lessons of history, comprehensive understanding of culture and its interaction in the amalgamation of communities, and new pathways to redraw the canvass of human development by improving the quality of life and death, are imperative to advance theory building as well as to improve practices of the networked media.
The seminar raises new questions on the ruptures in societal fabric due to communication inequalities in a fragile post-pandemic world. In this process, the seminar aims at mapping the paradigmatic turns in the communication ecosystem prevailing all over the world through the lens of culture and culture industry, aspirations for future and lessons from past experiences.
The seminar will also be a platform for dialogue between industry and academia to discuss the issues of disconnection, disenchantment and dilemmas in the world of media. It has another core area of discussion on media and gender which is expected to unravel bias and ‘othering’ in mediation and communication. We request active participation of practitioners, academics, and anyone who has interest in the aforementioned fields of enquiry and invite proposals to present a paper in the seminar. Selected papers will be published in the form of a book with ISBN or in a special issue of a peer reviewed journal.

Netra 2022
Journalism is all about exploring the unknown says, Babu Ramachandran, Senior Broadcast Journalist, and producer of ‘Vallathoru Katha’ while releasing the first issue of Netra 2022. Journalism is facing unprecedented threats from all quarters and systematic efforts to destroy the pillars of credibility of the Fourth Estate are rampant, he added. The function was held at the department of Journalism on 22nd July. Ms. Mathu Saji, Prime Time anchor of Mathrubhumi news received the first copy. She said gender plays a major role in decisions taken by the journalistic systems and women’s journey to the top is never easy. Production of the lab journal is entrusted with the 2021-24 batch of BA JMC this year. Short films made by the 2020-23 batch of B. A JMC was screened on the occasion.
Incredible advertising - Prathap Suthan - 10 June 2022
On June 10, 2022, The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized an interactive session called Incredible Advertising on Advertising with notable alumni and veteran advertiser Mr. Prathap Suthan. Mr. Suthan a graduate of the 1984 B.Com batch of Mar Ivanios is the man credited for the famous ad campaigns like India Shining, Incredible India and Next is What (for Samsung). Mr. Prathap Suthan who has over 35 years of experience in the advertising industry is currently the Managing Partner and Chief Creative Officer at Bang in the Middle.
The session which began at 10:30 am and went on till 11:30 pm was held in the Mar Gregorios Hall. The interactive session witnessed the active participation of the undergraduate students of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and the postgraduate students of the Department of Malayalam.
Mr. Prathap Suthan recollected his days at college and how the various experiences from his college life moulded his career. Various issues like ethics in advertising and the scope of advertising in metaverse were some of the talking points of the day. Mr. Suthan also shared anecdotes from some of the famous campaigns that he associated with over the years.
