ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Journalism, Mass Communication, and Video Production of Mar Ivanios College is a pioneering establishment in the state for imparting academic training in the discipline at the undergraduate level. The specialized UG programme of the department has been structured in the Career Related CBCSS system since 1999. The B.A JMC programme includes Journalism and Media Studies, Visual Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Media Research, Online Journalism, and allied areas along with a specific thrust on language studies through complementary courses. The programme gives theoretical as well as practical inputs to Mass Communication students in print and visual media through newspaper production, production of short films, Public Service Advertisements, documentaries, and news bulletin production.

About 50% of the students who graduate with Mass Communication from this department seek higher education in various Indian universities and colleges. The course is suitable for beginning serious academic inquiry in the field of Mass Communication and securing jobs in various areas such as Journalism, Film making, Advertising, Public Relations, Communication Design, and so on. Alumni of the department work in leading print and electronic media across the country. Some of them are working in film and advertising field.

In 2013, the Department started offering a complementary course for the PG programme - M.A. Malayalam with Media Studies. This PG programme is suitable for students who aspire to a career in Malayalam print and electronic media. However, they can also pursue higher education in Malayalam at par with the conventional M.A. Malayalam course.

The teachers of the department function as members of various academic bodies and ensure the linkage of academic studies with the media industries.

Various productions of the department can be viewed on the YouTube channel, ‘Netra TV Mar Ivanios College’.

Students regularly publish newspapers as part of their practical training. The department conducts workshops, seminars, industry visits, lecture series, bridge courses, finishing courses, etc. to add value to the prescribed curriculum and capture the emerging trends in media and communication.
