ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1950 with a three-year undergraduate course. Right from its inception the Department has striven to set high standards of teaching and learning. It became a Post-graduate Department in the year 1982, affiliated to the University of Kerala. Apart from B.Sc and M.Sc Degree Programmes, the Department offers Mathematics as a Complementary Course for the Physics, Chemistry, and Economics Degree Programmes. The Department also offers a Course in Operations Research for aspiring students from non-mathematics Degree streams as an Open Course. The Department became a Research Department in 2009. The Research Department was formally inaugurated by His Excellency Bharat Ratna Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the then President of India. The Department has approved Research Guides. Research areas of the department include Fuzzy Mathematics, Optimization, Interdisciplinary Economics, History of Mathematics, Number Theory, Numerical Analysis, Differential Equations and Graph Theory. The Department completed one Major Research Project and 4 Minor Research Projects of the UGC. The Department also has one ongoing Minor Research Project. UG and PG students of the Department have bagged top positions in the University Examinations for several years. Dr. Mary George, one of the faculty members of the Department, won the UGC Research Award in the year 2004, a Post-Doctoral Fellowship for three years. One of the Research Scholars of the Department, Dr. Anusha Edwin bagged the Best Paper Award at the International Conference conducted by Swamy Vivekananda Association of Science and Humanities (SVASH-2014) (Govt. Reg. No. TVM/TC/493/2013) in 2014. UG students of the Department won the prestigious INSPIRE award instituted by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Faculty members of the Department have presented Research Papers at reputed International Conferences held in France, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia. The Department regularly organizes various national academic programmes in collaboration with reputed Institutions of Higher Education in the Country, such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Trivandrum, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER-TVM) Trivandrum. The Department offered a Certificate Course, a Diploma Course, and an Advanced Diploma Course in Computer Applications in 2005-08. Prof. Thanu Iyer, an eminent Mathematician and Scholar was the first Head of the Department. He was succeeded by Prof. John K. John, Prof. G. Thomas, Prof. V. Anantharama Sarma, Prof. Y. Kalyanasundaram, Prof. Kunjunjamma Chacko, Prof. M. V. Abraham, Prof. K. G. Lizykutty, Dr. Cherian Thomas, Dr. V. Madhukar Mallayya, Dr. K. L. Anandavally, Dr. James Alexander, Dr. Mary George, Dr. Suja Eapen and Dr. Annie Abraham. The Department is one of the DST-FIST-identified departments of the College.  Members of the Faculty function regularly in the Boards of Studies of both UG and PG levels at the University of Kerala and have been elected to the University Senate/ Syndicate. Apart from offering UG and PG programmes, the department is a research department approved by the University of Kerala. The Department also offers certificate courses in Quantitative Techniques and Statistical Methods. 

VISION

* To instill analytical and logical thinking among the students and promote mathematical thought as an important area of human thought.

* To encourage students to prove their thinking in abstract and graphic form so that they can express a full understanding of an idea.

* To train students to understand why procedures and algorithms work.

* To earn regional and global recognition for its expertise in mathematics and the production of high-quality research.

MISSION

* To contribute to the development of students as mathematical thinkers enabling them to become lifelong learners, to continue to grow in their chosen professions, and to function as productive citizens.

* To provide an environment where the students can learn and become competent users of mathematics and mathematical applications.

* To train students to present logical and mathematical arguments before a group.

* To encourage students to avail of student projects from government funding agencies to develop their analytical thinking.

* To conduct outreach programmes for socially marginalized students and communities.

* To conduct faculty development programmes through invited talks and workshops.
